Newquay BID Door Mural Trail 2026

As part of the Newquay Door Mural Trail organised by Newquay BID, I’ve created a new public artwork on Bank Street. The Island After Dark explores the atmosphere of Newquay’s coastline at night, bringing a familiar view of The Island into the town centre.
I’ve recently completed a new mural on Newquay’s high street as part of the Door Mural Trail organised by Newquay BID.
The piece, The Island After Dark, is inspired by Newquay’s coastline, with The Island silhouetted on the horizon beneath a luminous night sky. As with much of my work, the focus is on how light transforms familiar places after dark, in this case, the soft glow along the horizon set against the depth of the evening sky.
This was my first time creating a public artwork directly in situ, and it was a very different experience from working in the studio. The painting developed over several days on the high street, with people stopping to watch, ask questions, and share their thoughts as the scene gradually appeared. It was slightly surreal at times, but also incredibly rewarding to see the work take shape in a public setting.
Like many outdoor projects, the process wasn’t without its challenges. The Cornish weather made itself known partway through, and I had to spend time repairing areas where rain had affected the paint. However, stepping back and viewing the work from a distance, as it’s intended to be seen, the overall effect remained strong, and the piece came together as I had hoped.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of the project was the sense of connection with the town. This isn’t a painting viewed in a gallery space, but something encountered in passing, on the way to the shops, between errands, or as part of a walk through the town centre.
It’s been a real pleasure to contribute something permanent to Newquay’s streets, and I’m very grateful to Newquay BID and the team at EE for making it possible.
If you’re in Newquay, you can find the mural on Bank Street, between EE and The Cornish Oven.
I chatted to Newquay BID about the mural - you can see the short video here:
