Between Here & There

'Between Here and There' captures silhouetted figures crossing an elevated walkway at Manchester Airport. Surrounded by the functional architecture of a busy transport hub, they are caught in a brief moment between one place and the next.
I'd been photographing multi-storey car parks around Manchester airport when I noticed an elevated walkway crossing above the road. What caught my attention were the people moving through it — small silhouetted figures framed by the structure as they made their way across.
I didn't know where they were going, and that became part of the appeal.
They could be heading towards a flight, returning home, arriving for work or simply moving from one part of the airport to another. There isn't even an aeroplane in the painting. The figures and the architecture around them are enough to suggest travel.
My original reference was taken during the day, but I reimagined the scene after dark. Artificial light illuminates the walkway and turns the figures into glowing silhouettes, giving an otherwise functional piece of airport infrastructure a slightly dreamlike quality.
The title Between Here and There came from that sense of being temporarily between destinations, no longer quite where you started, but not yet where you're going.
Selected stars have been painted with fluorescent acrylics, revealing an additional layer of the night sky when viewed under UV light.
