Drawn to the Harbour Lights

Drawn to the Harbour Lights captures one of Newquay's most familiar views after dark, looking from Killacourt across the harbour towards The Headland, the Atlantic Hotel and The Island. The harbour lights and their reflections became the real focus of the painting, pulling the eye through the darkness towards the water and giving the painting its title.

After the wonderful response to my The Island After Dark Door Mural, I found myself wanting to return to this part of Newquay in paint.

I already had several night-time reference photographs taken from Killacourt, one of the best viewpoints for bringing together so many recognisable parts of the town in a single scene. From here, the harbour sits below, with a glimpse of Towan Beach, the pier lights reflected across the water, The Headland and Atlantic Hotel beyond and The Island connected to the mainland by its distinctive bridge.

Although all of those landmarks help make the view unmistakably Newquay, it was actually the reflected harbour lights that interested me most.

They create a path of colour across the dark water, naturally drawing the eye towards the harbour below. That became the idea behind the title, Drawn to the Harbour Lights.

Unlike some of my Newquay After Dark paintings, this isn't really about finding beauty in an overlooked corner of the town. It's almost the opposite: this is one of the classic Newquay views, seen at the time of day I love to paint most.
