Going Somewhere

'Going Somewhere' captures Newquay Airport after dark, its illuminated buildings and runway infrastructure sitting beneath a wide night sky. It's a familiar local place built around one simple idea: people are always on their way somewhere else.

The Story

People arrive carrying different plans, expectations and reasons for travelling. Some are leaving home, others are returning to it, while many are somewhere in between. That sense of possibility was what interested me about Newquay Airport.

Rather than concentrating on an aircraft or a particular journey, I wanted the airport itself to become the subject. After dark, its lights transform what is essentially a collection of functional buildings and infrastructure into somewhere that feels full of potential movement.

The wide night sky became an important part of the painting too. Against it, the airport sits relatively small within the landscape, yet the journeys beginning and ending there can stretch far beyond the edge of the canvas.

The title Going Somewhere deliberately leaves the destination unanswered.

We don't know who is travelling, where they're heading or whether this represents the beginning or end of their journey. It's simply that familiar moment when one place becomes the starting point for another.

The viewpoint that inspired Going Somewhere.

Under normal light, the night sky stretches above the illuminated road. But viewed under UV light, a hidden layer is revealed, transforming the sky and giving the painting a second life after dark.

Painting coming soon...
