Herd

Inspired by Herd in Newquay, this painting explores how a single splash of light can transform an ordinary street into a destination. Beneath a star-filled sky, the warm yellow glow of the restaurant spills across the pavement, drawing attention away from the sea beyond and towards the welcoming frontage itself.

Some paintings begin with a beautiful view, but this one began with a yellow glow.

I'd already painted Rosa, another of Pete's restaurants, when he suggested I might like to paint Herd and Ralph's as well I thought I'd see if I could accept the challenge. I knew that Herd had a striking frontage at night, and when I stood outside taking photos I knew this one had legs.

The illuminated sign cast a warm yellow glow across the building, transforming the frontage into something much more inviting after dark. Beyond the restaurant, there is a glimpse of the sea, but it almost disappears from view as your eye is pulled to the right.

For once, Newquay's coastline wasn't the thing demanding attention.

This painting celebrates those familiar places that quietly draw people in, not through grand architecture, but through atmosphere, welcome and the promise of something worth discovering. The burgers are also excellent!

What began with individual paintings gradually became a set. Herd, Rosa and Ralph's are connected through the same owner, but each represents a different kind of social space and has developed its own visual character.
