Stargazing from the Beach
Share
Stargazing from the Beach celebrates one of the simplest shared experiences of all: looking up. Set on Newquay's coastline beneath a star-filled sky, the painting captures the quiet wonder of standing together and taking a moment to appreciate the night above us. It explores how darkness can encourage us to slow down, look beyond ourselves and reconnect with the world around us.
Some of the most memorable moments happen when nothing much is happening at all.
Standing on the beach after dark, looking up at a sky full of stars, is an experience that asks very little of us. There are no tickets, no timetable and no destination, just a few quiet minutes spent sharing the same view.
What interested me wasn't astronomy itself, but the feeling it creates. However different our lives may be, we all stand beneath the same night sky. For a brief moment, everyday worries seem a little smaller.
Looking back, this painting marked the beginning of a theme that has continued to run through my work. The simple act of looking up, sharing a quiet moment beneath the night sky, would later inspire 'Looking Up', created in collaboration with Nova Stargazing. Although the two paintings are very different, they explore the same feeling of curiosity, perspective and wonder.
Exhibited at The Poly, Falmouth 2025.
