Tuesday Night

Tuesday Night captures an evening match at Truro City Football Club, with the main stand illuminated beneath the floodlights as play continues on the pitch. It's the first painting to emerge from a visit to the ground as I began developing a wider body of work around football after dark.

The Story

The starting point for Tuesday Night was a visit to Truro City Football Club with my camera.

I'd begun thinking about developing more paintings around football after dark, and rather than relying on photographs I'd come across or older family references, I wanted to start visiting grounds myself, experiencing the atmosphere and looking for the views that interested me as a painter.

Truro was one of the first.

It was a Tuesday evening as the sun set and the floodlights turned on, and I spent time photographing the ground from different positions. This particular view immediately felt like Truro to me. The angle captures the main stand, the players on the pitch and some of the activity around the ground, while the floodlights bring everything together against the night sky.

That recognisable sense of place became important to the painting. I wanted someone who knows the ground; whether as a supporter, player or regular visitor, to be able to look at it and recognise somewhere familiar.

Tuesday Night became the first finished painting from that visit, and the beginning of a growing collection based on my own visits to football grounds after dark.
