Set apart, yet side by side.
The old and new cathedrals of Coventry Cathedral stand beside each other, their forms defined by light and shadow. One remains open to the sky, marked by absence, while the other rises with clarity and structure.
The painting captures a contrast between past and present, where what remains and what has been rebuilt exist together, shaping the way the space is experienced.
The title "Sent to Coventry" evokes the city’s layered history, referencing not only the cathedral’s past destruction and rebirth but also the historical notion of being 'sent to Coventry', isolated or cast away, suggesting resilience, redemption, and quiet contemplation. I like to think that my figures in my painting are doing just that as they admire the buildings in front of them.
